The Story:
Discussing Chapter 23

by Living Springs Community Church on May 15, 2016

“The Story” is an opportunity to experience the Bible in its chronological order. The Living Springs family is reading The Story together during the week, and our Sunday messages will help us process and apply what we’ve been reading. If you are in a group or family that is studying The Story together, you can use the questions below to spark discussion.

Chapter 23: Jesus’ Ministry Begins

Based on Matthew 3, 4, 11; Mark 1, 2, 3; Luke 8; John 1, 2, 3, 4

  • John the Baptizer begins ministry
  • Jesus is baptized
  • Jesus begins ministry
  • A wedding at Cana
  • The woman at the well
  • John the Baptizer is imprisoned

Breaking the ice

Where are you most likely to experience a computer virus? At home? At work? At school? In your local Starbucks? What steps do you typically take to avoid being infected?

Digging in

Way back at the beginning of our human story, the Enemy infected us with a virus that leads to destruction. Even today this virus spreads throughout the human network, rewriting our hard drives and redirecting our functions. Jesus came to remove that virus and restore the God-centered operating system we were created with.

  1. How were God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit involved in Jesus’ baptism (p. 322)?
  2. What do you learn from Jesus’ example about how to resist temptation? (p. 322)
  3. Compare Satan and evil spirits as they are depicted in The Story, with how they are depicted today in films, television, literature, and art.
  4. Jesus was constantly interacting with different types of people: curious Jews, antagonistic Pharisees, society’s castoffs, and foreigners. What do you learn from Him about how to respond to different types of people?

Pray for opportunities this week to interact with people in a way that gives them a favorable impression of Jesus.

For next week…

Chapter 24: No Ordinary Man

Based on Matthew 5, 6, 7, 9; Mark 4–6; Luke 10 and 15; John 6

  • Jesus gives the Sermon on the Mount
  • Jesus sends His followers out to preach
  • John the Baptizer dies
