“The Story” is an opportunity to experience the Bible in its chronological order. The Living Springs family is reading The Story together during the week, and our Sunday messages will help us process and apply what we’ve been reading. If you are in a group or family that is studying The Story together, you can use the questions below to spark discussion.

Chapter 13: The King Who Had It All

Based on 1 Kings 1–8, 10, 11; 2 Chronicles 5–7; Proverbs 1–3, 6, and 20–21:

  • David dies
  • Solomon’s reign
  • Solomon displays great wisdom
  • Building the temple
  • Solomon marries foreign wives and betrays God

Breaking the ice

What is one of the smartest things you’ve ever done?

Digging in

Solomon’s story began well, but ended poorly. In spite of God’s tremendous blessing, Solomon chose to follow the cultural practices of other nations rather than God’s clear instructions.

Reflecting

  1. Have you ever been at building dedication? Why do you think Solomon make the dedication of the temple such a big event?
  2. Which of Solomon’s proverbs resonate with you?
  3. Is extreme wealth a good thing or a bad thing??
  4. Is there anything practical you can do to become wise? What can you do to maintain wisdom throughout a lifetime?
  5. Solomon’s failures began when he married women who served other gods. Why is it important for a husband and wife to both be committed Christians? What advice would you give someone who is dating a nonChristian?

Praying

Pray for wisdom. Pray for God to open your eyes to areas where you might not be making wise decisions.

For next week…

Chapter 14: A Kingdom Torn in Two

Based on 1 Kings 12–16:

  • Division of the kingdom
  • King Jeroboam 1 of Israel reigns
  • King Rehoboam of Judah reigns
  • King Ahab of Israel reigns
  • King Jehoshaphat of Judah reigns
