“The Story” is an opportunity to experience the Bible in its chronological order. The Living Springs family is reading The Story together during the week, and our Sunday messages will help us process and apply what we’ve been reading. If you are in a group or family that is studying The Story together, you can use the questions below to spark discussion.

Chapter 11: From Shepherd to King

Based on 1 Samuel 16, 17, 18, 24, 31; 2 Samuel 6 and 22; 1 Chronicles 17; and Psalm 59:

  • Samuel anoints David
  • David kills Goliath
  • Saul repeatedly tries to kill David
  • Saul dies
  • David is named king

Breaking the ice

Numerically, what position do you hold among your siblings? Did you (or do you) have a certain role because of that position?

Digging in

According to custom, David was an unlikely choice to be anointed king, but he was God’s choice, and that made all the difference. David’s story is a series of adventures, decisions, victories, and failures—and through it all we see a very human man being used powerfully by God.

Reflecting

  1. What kind of giants do you face at work, at school, or in your family life? What makes you afraid of these giants—their size? Their taunts? The army behind them?
  2. Do you think young David was really brave to accept Goliath’s challenge? Or just naive?
  3. Have you ever been in conflict or disagreement with your leader, like David was with Saul? Is there anything you can apply from David’s situation to your own?
  4. David seems like a man of great passion, emotion, and intensity. Sometimes his impulsiveness got him into trouble. What most impresses you about how David responds after he has sinned?
  5. David seemed to be aware that he was part of the larger story that God was writing for His people. Do you ever have that awareness in your own day-to-day life?

Praying

Pray for victory over the giants you may be facing. Pray for self-control in place of impulsiveness. Pray for joy in your life’s daily adventures.

For next week…

Chapter 12: The Trials of a King

Based on 1 Samuel 11–12 and 18–19; 1 Chronicles 22 and 29; and Psalms 23, 32, and 51:

  • David’s reign
  • David commits adultery with Bathsheba
  • Solomon’s reign
  • The building of the temple
