The Story:
Discussing Chapter 9

by Living Springs Community Church on January 10, 2016

“The Story” is an opportunity to experience the Bible in its chronological order. The Living Springs family is reading The Story together during the week, and our Sunday messages will help us process and apply what we’ve been reading. If you are in a group or family that is studying The Story together, you can use the questions below to spark discussion.

Chapter 9: The Faith of a Foreign Woman

Based on Ruth 1–4:

  • The time of the judges
  • Naomi and Ruth return from Moab
  • Ruth meets Boaz
  • Boaz marries Ruth

Breaking the ice

When was the last time you moved? Where did you move from?

Digging in

The story of Ruth is a literary and redemptive gem that glimmers against a backdrop of blackness. The four chapters provide a symmetry and structure for the overarching Biblical story of redemption.

  1. Do you think Naomi made the right decision to return to Israel after being widowed? What factors do you think influenced her decision?
  2. Why do you think Ruth decided life in Israel would be better for her than in her home country?
  3. Which parts of this story remind you of a situation in your own life?
  4. Who has been a “Ruth” to you, staying with you, caring for you, exercising strong faith when yours was weak?
  5. Is there someone in your life you can be a “Ruth” to? In what way?

The book of Ruth starts out as a story of loss. But it ends as a story of redemption. If you are suffering some kind of loss right now, pray for eyes of faith that can see redemption on the horizon. If you are experiencing times of blessing right now, pray for eyes of love that can see someone else who needs the kind of redemption you can provide.

For next week…

Chapter 10: Standing Tall, Falling Hard

Based on 1 Samuel 1–4, 8–13, and 15:

  • Saul’s reign
