“The Story” is an opportunity to experience the Bible in its chronological order. The Living Springs family is reading The Story together during the week, and our Sunday messages will help us process and apply what we’ve been reading. If you are in a group or family that is studying The Story together, you can use the questions below to spark discussion.

Chapter 8: A Few Good Men and Women

Based on Judges 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 13, 14, 15, 16:

  • Judges begin to rule
  • Deborah’s rule
  • Gideon’s rule
  • Samson’s rule

Breaking the ice

When it comes to dangerous situations, would you rather be the rescued or the rescuer?

Digging in

God’s promises for His people sometimes have requirements. He will always deliver , but He expects us to do the same. In the book of Judges, we see what happens when we don’t. The Israelites developed a pattern of crying to God for help, obeying Him (at least partially) and being delivered, and then gradually returning to old habits and foreign values. The judges described in this chapter were leaders God raised up to deliver His people from the consequences of their own poor choices.

Reflecting

  1. Which of the three judges in this chapter are you most like—Deborah, Gideon, or Samson?
  2. Israel suffered from “generational curses” because parents and elders did not pass their faith to the next generation. What can we do in our families and our church to avoid the same mistake?
  3. How is American culture today similar to the culture of Canaan that surrounded the Israelites?
  4. Does God still raise up judges today?

Praying

The three judges we read about in this chapter were all flawed, ordinary people. Pray that God will gently reveal your flaws to you, so you can ask for help in those areas. Pray for people in leadership positions—in our country, our community, our church, and our families.

For next week…

Chapter 9: The Faith of a Foreign Woman

Based on Ruth 1–4:

  • The time of the judges
  • Naomi and Ruth return from Moab
  • Ruth meets Boaz
  • Boaz marries Ruth
