“The Story” is an opportunity to experience the Bible in its chronological order. The Living Springs family is reading The Story together during the week, and our Sunday messages will help us process and apply what we’ve been reading. If you are in a group or family that is studying The Story together, you can use the questions below to spark discussion.

Chapter 6: Wandering

Based on Numbers 10–14, 20, 21, 25, and 27; and Deuteronomy 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 9, 29, 30, 31, 32, and 34:

  • Wilderness wanderings
  • God sends quail and manna
  • Spies are sent to Canaan
  • Aaron dies
  • The Israelites camp in the plains of Moab

Breaking the ice

What are some travel frustrations you’ve experienced? Traffic? Airport delays? Unexpected costs? Annoying travel partners? Baggage?

Digging in

God’s plan was to deliver His people from the culture of slavery in Egypt, and to restore them as His people in the bountiful land He had promised to them. In spite of His faithful provision and protection, the people complained and doubted. They rejected the land God promised them, and instead wandered in the wilderness for 40 years.

Reflecting

  1. Who do you relate to in this chapter—Moses, or the people of Israel? Why?
  2. Who do you relate to in the story of the 10 spies—Joshua and Caleb, or the other 8? Why?
  3. Take a look at the story of Moses’ disobedience on page 78–79. God says He is punishing Moses “because you did not trust me.” Do you think this lack of trust comes through in what Moses did or what Moses said?
  4. In his final message to the people of Israel (starting on page 84), Moses charged them with teaching their children everything that God had done for them. Why is this important? How are you carrying out this responsibility? Does this instruction apply only to parents of young children?

Praying

If you have done any complaining this week, ask forgiveness. Then spend some time thanking God for blessings that you’ve taken for granted. And pray for an opportunity to talk about those blessings with someone else, just as a way of keeping God’s story alive.

For next week…

Chapter 7: The Battle Begins

Based on Joshua 1, 2, 6, 8, 10, 11, 23, and 24:

  • Joshua is appointed leader
  • The Israelites enter Canaan
  • Conquest of Canaan
  • Joshua dies
