Power for Right Living

1 John 1:1–9; John 8:12

John 8:12: Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”

The Lampstand, which burned continually, was the only source of light in the Holy Place and therefore enabled the priests to see how to go about their work of approaching God. Jesus is our Lampstand. He did not identify himself as a light, but as the light of the world. Without this light, we would never be able to find our way to God. The Apostle Paul stated it this way: “Starting from scratch, he made the entire human race and made the earth hospitable, with plenty of time and space for living so we could seek after God, and not just grope around in the dark but actually find him. He doesn’t play hide-and-seek with us. He’s not remote; he’s near” (Acts 17, The Message). Any effort to know God apart from knowing Christ is like looking for your contacts with your eyes closed. Because Jesus is the exact image of God, knowing him leads us straight to God (John 14:6-7). We don’t need to seek to remove darkness from our lives. We only need to add the Light; the darkness will flee.

What are some things you could do to get to know Jesus better?

Lord Jesus, l want to know you better. I don’t just want to know more about you, but I want to know you in intimate ways that lead to a more fruitful, purposeful way of living.
